6th Annual SisterNet® Retreat:
Straight A’s-Adjusting Our Attitude From Apathy to Activism

ICVP hosted the 6th Annual SisterNet® Retreat “Straight A’s: Adjusting our Attitude from Apathy to Activism” at the Manville Retreat Center in Manville, IL from October 8 -10, 2004.  Shattering all previous attendance records, 75 young women representing 9 SisterNet® chapters from across the state attended this year’s retreat.

Retreat participants started off the fun-filled weekend with a screening and thought provoking discussion of Girlhood, an award-winning documentary which chronicles the coming of age for two young girls serving time in the Waxter Juvenile Detention Facility, home to Maryland’s most violent juvenile offenders. During Moonlight Sharing, SisterNet® activists shared personal stories and reaffirmed their commitment to preventing violence against girls and women. Chapters also worked closely with their Adult Sponsors and SisterNet Organizers to plan the program year and strengthen their violence prevention knowledge by participating in ICVP’s innovative, interactive Roots of Violence and Teen Dating Violence workshops.

SisterNet® Chapters in attendance at the 6th annual retreat include Cairo SisterNet, Carbondale SisterNet, Global Girls, B.U.I.L.D., Rockford HUGS, Young Women’s Leadership Charter School, North Lawndale College Preparatory HS, and Howard Area Community Center SisterNet.
