Peacing It Together

Before school violence became a headline in our newspapers, ICVP heard first-hand accounts of teachers’ and parents’ growing concerns.

At the same time, there was a seemingly endless list of companies promoting their own solutions to these emerging problems, and the field lacked a thoughtful review of these new resources. ICVP responded: it pulled together a multi-disciplinary task force to look at these curricula, determine the best audiences for each and rate them in more than 40 areas related to violence prevention. Each successive edition continued to add to this core material, resulting in the current edition of more than 120 pages chock full of information for anyone working with youth.

Peacing It Together: A Framework for Preventing Youth Violence and Curriculum Review Guide provides violence prevention practitioners, health educators, teachers, administrators and youth workers with an overview of youth violence prevention strategies across the life cycle. Special issues, including teen dating violence, bullying, school violence, handgun violence, and gang violence, are also addressed. In addition, Peacing It Together offers a review of youth violence prevention curricula based on criteria identified as being essential for effective violence prevention. To help readers quickly identify appropriate curricula, they are outlined in two matrixes: 1) demographics of intended audience (age, gender, race and urban, suburban, or rural locale); and 2) types of violence addressed and methods of prevention utilized.

Peacing It Together is offered in book and CD-ROM formats. The CD, which is Mac and PC compatible, also includes valuable tip sheets from ICVP’s Evaluation Resource Institute. These tip sheets provide current information to help program address issues such as: “Planning for Evaluation,” “Designing Focus Groups” and “Reporting Your Evaluation Findings.”
