Seven Phases of Evaluation
An Introduction

Evaluation is an important process for developing effective violence prevention and social service programs; however, knowing how to design an evaluation to fit your organization’s needs could be challenging.  The seven phases of evaluation are intended to serve as a roadmap for designing and implementing an effective evaluation of your program.  An effective evaluation should assess whether the program, as it is currently implemented, is meeting its goals.  Evaluations typically focus on either:

  • Assessing whether the program was implemented as originally planned (i.e., process evaluation), or
  • Assessing the degree to which a program is reaching its intended outcomes (i.e., outcome evaluation).

However, it does not matter what type of evaluation you choose to implement, the process of progressing through the seven phased explained here is the same.
